running into cash beckett was never really a part of brynne's plan. although, she was never really one to plan things, meeting cash was always an accident. in fact their first meeting was even an accident. they had been five the first time they had met, brynne had been on vacation to her family's summer home in tuscany and the two had met near the small river that was now part of brynne's property. the next summer, the two had run into each other again, and the next and the next. then finally, the summer of brynne's fifteenth year, the two ran into each other again. this time, finding each other down by the seaside. after that summer-long fling, he had stolen her heart and moved away with his family. after that summer, she had never planned on seeing him again, but then again she hadn't really planned to have his child either. for awhile, cash had become nothing but a memory, a fond feeling to look back on, but every day when brynne woke up and spotted her daughter, half a moment was spent remembering him. memories, though, we're supposed to stay memories. after the first year with holly, brynne had little thought of ever seeing cash or telling him of holly. she had been doing fine on her own and it seemed easier not to think about the possibility of him one day coming around.
it was a casablanca moment though, an "of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walked into mine" kind of a moment that hit her when cash stepped through the door way of the inn. a glorious moment, yes, but also a completely terrifying moment. it was something she had never really planned to have to explain, something she hadn't prepared herself for. a flash of his smile and she was already caught up in that same feeling she had had when she was a teenager. the same silly feeling that put pterodactyls in her tummy. the few days that followed that moment left her under the same damn spell. she was already falling, already feeling the exact same as she had years ago, and that was what had led her to spill her secret to cash. the one thing that she never thought she'd have to explain. his reaction to finding out about holly had been far better than she had expected. she was terrified he'd hate her for it, but he had been perfectly fine with it all, well, at least he seemed to be fine with it, just a little shocked. it was arranging the meeting of cash and holly that as the newest issue. with everything going so well, it was probably about time for something bad to happen. normally, she was an optimistic person, but this, for some reason was making her rather sick to her stomach. worry, excitement, nerves, a terrible combination.
why she was so nervous, she wasn't sure. she knew both holly and cash well enough to know that the two would get along. she knew both of them were open minded and both of them were excited. it was highly unlikely things would go terribly wrong, but bee being the crazy protective mother she was had gotten herself so worked up to the point of nearly making herself sick. "calm down, momma," holly said, pressing both hands to brynne's cheeks. "you worry too much." she giggled. brynne couldn't help but lighten up a bit at that. holly's reassurance was all she really needed. "thanks, sweetie." bee said, laughing softly and pressing a kiss to holden's forehead before standing up. holden grinned and swiftly headed off to her room to grab some things. brynne, however, made her way downstairs to pick up the living room a bit. the room was already rather spotless, but her nerves were telling her otherwise. after rearranging the piece on the coffee table several times, she realized it was probably best if she just sat down and didn't touch anything. chill out, bee. chill out. she reminded herself yet again, taking a few deep breaths.
within a few moments, holly hurried down the stairs with a coloring book and a small box full of stuff in her hands. "d'you think he'll wanna color with me? " she asked excitedly, placing the box of stuff on the table. "i bet he will," bee said, a smile coming to her face as she noticed holly's excitement. "so, what's in the box?" she asked, raising her eyebrows and motioning to the box that holly had placed on the table. "raffie and crayons and my ballet trophy and my soccer pictures and my report card and that blue ribbon i got last year!" she said, rattling off everything she had put in the box. brynne looked a little confused. "why all that stuff?" she finally asked. i dunno, thought i should show him all the cool stuff about me. y'know, so he'll wanna be my dad..." holden explained, looking a little embarrassed. brynne couldn't help but to make the sort of motherly "awe" face at that. "sweetie.. he's gonna like you without all that stuff." she said. "hope so," holden muttered softly, taking a seat on the couch before looking to bee. "you sure he's coming?" brynne laughed a little, noticing holden starting to get a bit nervous. "look who needs to calm down now!" she said poking her tongue out at her. "he'll be here any minute." she explained, glancing at the clock before wrapping a reassuring arm around holden. holly took a deep breath, leaning lightly against brynne, now waiting.
a few minutes later, the doorbell rang. holden quickly sat up and looked to brynne. bee chuckled and took a deep breath before standing up. "i'll get it," she said, knowing it was probably better for the both of them for her to answer the door. holly needed a little time to compose herself, and cash didn't need the shock. brynne hurried to the door, opening it with a grin. seeing him there was rather reassuring. he could've easily blown the whole thing off, not shown up, but he came instead. it was one less thing to go wrong and one more thing to calm her down a bit. "ready?" bee asked, chuckling lightly at the question. obviously, no one was really ready for this kind of situation. after standing at the doorway with him for a few moments, she knew it was time to take him inside. she took his arm, leading him inside. "just remember, she's as nervous as you are." she whispered in his ear as they stepped into the room.
holden had moved from the couch, standing in place as they stepped into the room. her eyes instantly locked on cash, examining him. her face lit up a bit and a smile came to her face, much like a kid on christmas morning. "h-hi..." she said after a moment, her nerves being rather obvious in her shaky voice. she was excited though, that was obvious, but a little bit timid to the awkwardness of the situation. "i'm.. i'm holden.." she said, taking a few shy steps toward him. "y-you can call me holly..." brynne took a step back, just watching. there wasn't really much else she could do. she had prepared them both as much as she could by telling each about the other. now, all she could do was watch and pray things went well.
